I’m getting tired of people always defending Japan about their sexist views. Like hey, I like anime too but I’m not going to deny that it’s extremely sexist. Gender roles in Japan are still deeply engraved into them, and it’s pretty obvious just by watching almost any anime. Women are always the stay at home moms, the girl who impresses the boy by being a great chef and making lunches for her whole family, being subjected to panty shots, groping, bath scenes. They almost never have good action roles, and even if they do Japan has to soup it up with lots of fan service, just to degrade them.

my FAVORITE tropes compiled thanks to some suggestions from others

  • a character gets a sick burn and doesn’t realize it immediately, at some point later there’s just “HEY WAIT A MINUTE”
  • the double take. this one’s an oldie but a goodie
  • the injured character makes the killing shot that saves everyone else in a dangerous situation
  • a character who isn’t speaking is doing something weird in the background, it’s subtle and never acknowledged it’s just there for those who notice it (pulling another character out of something they got stuck in, making a huge sandwich, etc)
  • the beleaguered assistant inches away from smacking their boss
  • “quick act natural”
  • in that vein, the leader character was just in a shouting match with someone and when they come back the rest of the team scrambles to look like they weren’t listening at the door
  • never forget: “he’s standing right behind me isn’t he”
  • When a character mentions a normal past event and someone else mentions an absurd detail (”Don’t you remember what happened last time you went to the dentist?” “Those deaths were nothing to do with me”) 
  • Multiple characters banding together to lie about something 
  • Characters being split up for questioning
  • Really stoic characters briefly becoming happy, freaking everyone out
  • “I think that went well!” *Distant explosion*

-“quick act natural” *everyone scrambles to do completely random shit that looks anything but natural*

Always a good one:

– Character A is talking, saying something like “It’s not like anybody would ever be so stupid to do that, right”

*scene changes, Character B is shown doing exactly that stupid thing*

– a sweet and good and sunny character going full dark 
– any kind of slow motion entrance or on-the-nose music cue
– everyone getting mad at the character cracking jokes during the danger 
– Dramatically Reunited Lovers™
– lowkey downplaying news of a crisis (“so it’s an un-killable alien, escaped from another dimension to wipe out the solar system”. “oh cool. I thought it was going to be something bad”.)
– bottleneck episodes 
– “guys, I have a really bad idea”

This was what I was talking about by saying Pikachu was speaking English. lmao the audience was exactly like my theater’s reaction. BY FAR THE MONST WEIRDEST THING POKEMON HAS EVER DONE. like omg the fuck hell na so weird and awkward like naaa boy!

okay everything about this video is absolute gold:

  • the fact that the guy argues via the puppet the entire time

  • the music

  • “let’s discuss the contradiction”
  • the overuse of the word “camera”
  • the way the puppet goes from trying to placate the guy to actively arguing against the guy and like turning it around on the guy
  • “youre consciously making a conscious choice”
  • the fact that by the end the puppet is basically screaming and the music is just. so loud.
  • “YOURE BREAKING THE CAMERA” as the video abruptly ends
