Sometimes it is (literally) translated as an empty cicada shell, other times it is used to refer to more spiritual and cultural things: it could mean reality (“utsutsu”), or a living being, or the world itself; it could even simply mean emptiness, or how temporal things can be. Without more information about the film’s details, it’s hard for me to give an adequate translation.
